WHY HOME BASED PALLIATIVE CARE?

A few reasons for palliative care in Colombo and suburbs and also in rural Sri Lanka.

There are life limiting conditions like incurable cancer where one is reduced to very little or no treatment options. And patients who live with such diseases and their families go through immense suffering and also huge medical expenses often due to ignorance of the situation or other reasons.

The palliative care service aims to improve the quality of life for these patients and their families and to restore some dignity and give hope to such patients by supporting patients in their physical, emotional, psychological, social and spiritual needs and motivation and empowerment of families to provide effective home care.

WHAT KINDS OF SERVICES DO WE OFFER?

A small team from NHC base in Dehiwela will visit homes of such patients, of course at their request.

  • Initial Doctor’s assessment
  • Helping to treat common yet disturbing conditions which such patients face. Eg: feeding, Constipation, bathing, washing, sleeping, physical hygiene, Position in bed, use of wheel chair etc.
  • Preventing and treating bed sores and other common problems that surface.
  • Management of pain is an important and necessary component.
  • Training of the family member or care giver in some of these important skills.
